This alters the DNA of a particular cell
so that it can manufacture proteins to correct
genetic defects or produce other beneficial
changes in an organism.
Step 1: in genetic engineering
is to isolate the gene that is responsible
for the problem.
Step 2: is to clone (multiply) the gene.
Step 3: is to insert the gene inside the cell
so that it can work to alter bodily function.
Unfortunately Pattern Baldness appears to
be Polygenetic i.e. not just one but many
genes are involved in this condition.
FM (Follicular
Multiplication)
In the normal follicular
transplant technology you lose the hair in
your donor area to replace the hair in your
bald area. Follicular Multiplication technique
grows the hair in the bald area without losing
the hair in the donor area. This involves
dividing the follicle from the donor area
in such way that a both parts of the follicle
will have stem cells necessary produce the
hair follicle. The superficial part is transplanted
in the recipient bald area and the deep part
of follicle is left attached or transplanted
in the donor area. This means that it will
produce new follicles and the hair without
losing follicles and hair in the donor area.
Although the technology is available the success
rate of producing new hair follicle is said
to be about 30 – 50 %.
2 methods:
1. Hairs
are simply plucked from the scalp or beard
and then implanted into the bald part of the
scalp. The idea is that some stem cells at
the base of the hair follicle will be pulled
out along with the hair. Once the hair is
re-implanted, these cells would be able to
regenerate a new follicle. New hair will be
produced in the donor area where some stem
cells area left behind.
2. The upper part of the follicle
from the donor site is removed and transplanted
in the donor site and the deeper part of follicle
is left in donor site. The stem cells in both
segments produce the hair therefore the follicles
multiply.
HM (Hair Multiplication)
Here either from the stem
cells of the plucked hair or from the stem
cells from the Biopsy of the good quality
occipital hair (from the back of head) are
isolated and cultured in laboratory and are
then injected in the pores of the thinned
out follicles of the bald area. This will
strengthen the miniaturized hairs and also
produce new hairs i.e. Hair Multiplication
with the same number of follicles.
