Follicular Unit Hair Transplant is the only method by which one can grow permanently growing, natural looking, and undetectable hair in the bald or thin area. In olden days people used Punch or plug grafts where bunches of 15-25 hair in a plug taken from the side or the back of the scalp (Donor Area) were implanted in the front. This gave the typical pluggy (Cornrow, baby doll, tooth brush or cobble stone) appearance. They were later replaced in 1980s by Mini and then Micro grafts, which were randomly, cut smaller grafts of 5-8 hairs and 1-3 hairs respectively. The results improved but were still not near natural looking. 1983 it was discovered that nature grows our hair in groups of 1,2,3 or 4 hairs. These were called the Follicular Units. So surgeons started cutting and transplanting the grafts in the nature's way i.e. as Follicular Units and that gave completely natural looking hair and therefore Follicular Unit Transplant although is a highly skilled and labour and techno intensive procedure, has become the Gold Standard today.

Follicular Units can be harvested by first cutting the strip from the donor area (known as “Strip Method” ) or as individual units by special needles (Known as Follicular Extraction or FUE ).
